Magna Carta. Holy Grail.

Jay-Z is back with his twelfth solo album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The album begins with a singing Justin Timberlake over a heavy piano beat for about a minute. Which is the build up to Jay-Z's intro verse. Its a perfect intro to a much anticipated project. The album continues with "Picasso Baby" A gritty sound with samples of "Sirens" by Adrian Younge. Jay references plenty of artist with underlining verses like "Come through with Ye mask on, spray everything like SAMO..." "Tom Ford" (which will probably be the next single) is a catchy track where Jay boasts about not popping Molly but instead rocks the very expensive clothing line Tom Ford. The album goes on with features from Rick Ross, Frank Ocean, Beyonce, and Nas. In "Heaven" Jay tries to put the illumanti rumors to rest with lines like "conspiracy theorist screaming illumanti/ they can't believe this much skill is in the human body" and goes on to claim that his critics "dwell on devil shit" MCHG also contains a couple tracks with trap beats like "Beach Is Better" and my personal favorite "FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt" featuring Ross.
As a whole, the album is really good, but it is also safe in my opinion. The music doesn't push boundaries, and it's what I expected from a Jay-Z album. It's almost like a Watch The Throne album with no Kanye ha! Each song is great in there own way with the exception of "Oceans" (Frank Ocean sound out of place) and the boring "Part II" featuring Beyonce (which actually sounded like a Beyonce track featuring Jay-Z lol). Another disappointment is "BBC" which features Nas, Beyonce, Pharrell, Justin Timeberlake, and Timberland. One would think with all those amazing artist on one track the song would be epic, but it falls really short of that. Nonetheless Jay-Z fans will be proud as he delivers, once again, an awesome body of work filled with triple entendres and verses that will be recited all summer long.
Tracks to listen to:
"Holy Grail"
"Tom Ford"
"Fuckwithmeyouknowigotit"
"Crown"
"Jay-Z Blue"

Rating: 9/10
